Marks & Spencer V Debenhams: Who gets your vote?

Marks & Spencer

Debenhams

The two giants of the high street have now released their Christmas campaigns. These campaigns mean serious money, clearly both are big budget (perhaps M&S more than Debenhams) so it's obvious that they are fighting to be at the top of the high street this year.

Personally, the M&S advert does it to me much more than the Debenhams one does. It captures the magic of Christmas by using fantasy tales such as the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland, whilst having an all-star cast of the beautiful Rosie Huntington Whitely, David Gandy and Helena Bonham Carter. It was hoped by Johan Renck, the director, to appeal to the global market by using these universally recognised stories.

I felt that the Debenhams advert, although it has a very impressive selection of designers, it just didn't really interest me all that much. The narrative was very typical of a Christmas advert which hasn't separated it from the rest. I don't see Debenhams as the go-to for Christmas presents any more than I would M&S. I think M&S is better known for Christmas because of the food as well as their other products.

What do you think? Which advert stands out for you? Are there any other Christmas adverts that you think have made an impact?
