Trend: Camo

The camoflage trend seemingly always makes its rounds every few seasons. Be it traditional, neon or with a feminine twist it's a pattern that never goes out of style. It is a paradoxical thought that to stand out next season, wear camo, but with the new takes on the military staple, it's hard not to.

The camoflage trend seemingly always makes its rounds every few seasons. Be it traditional, neon or with a feminine twist it's a pattern that never goes out of style. It is a paradoxical thought that to stand out next season, wear camo, but with the new takes on the military staple, it's hard not to.

So what makes next seasons crop any different? Well from Jonathan Saunders we see an injection of bright colours into an otherwise traditionally styled camoflage print, juxtaposed with softer fabrics to stray away from the harness of military looks. Ethnic cultures-inspired Laurence Airline presents an interesting colour-way for camouflage, yet offset with African-inspired prints for a clash of patterns.

Christopher Kane
The ever exciting Christopher Kane has chosen a more subtle blue-grey colour-way for his camo, printed on feminine yet tough garments, reflecting more so on the original history of the print. Marques' Almeida have printed their camo on denim, again regaining the toughness of military looks but with a modern twist.

Streetwear designers like Bape will also be sure to adopt the trend this season. I particularly love the use of camoflage on this fur backpack! I think that the highstreet will have their own takes on the print inspired by these designers, especially printed on denim and with injections of bright colour.

So what does camoflage represent, other than the obvious military connotations? It's no secret that fashion often reflects current events, designers react to these and of course it influences their collections. So is it possible that camo keeps coming back due to political unrest? One look at the news and it's clear that we're in a world of war, it's very hard to ignore that fact. Even if you are apathetic about it, surely the constant stream of soldiers on the TV will have ingrained the camoflage aesthetic into your mind.
