Make it British!

"Made in Britain" has been a buzz-phrase floating around for some time now, especially after Mary Portas' Kinky Knickers which meant the coveting of fashion made in the UK. For some of us, this was outrageous because there are plenty of wonderful British independent lingerie brands that she seemed to be undermining by saying there were absolutely none. Whereas Mary didn't really do her research on the matter, the British manufacturing of fashion is now becoming stronger and will hopefully overthrow cheap, unethical manufacture in the UK.

So why make in Britain? Whilst it may be more expensive to do so, there are many great reasons why you should buy into British-made goods. For one, cutting the carbon footprint is an important issue for many manufacturers, and shipping from India and China is usually far too un-eco-friendly. Secondly, you know that by buying British-made that the conditions of the factories are not horrific and the labourers are being reasonably paid due to the laws we have in the UK. And also, more reason for us as Brits to change our consumption habits from buying cheap crap to buying more expensive pieces that last a lot longer and are better quality. By buying British-made items you're really investing in a better future for Britain's economy as well as investing in quality goods.

So many more brands are beginning to think about manufacturing in the UK because of this buzz. River Island have increased their British manufacture to 50%, M&S are set to have a Best of British line for Autumn 2013, designer Maria Grachvogel is beginning to manufacture in the UK, and Mulberry have been given money to open up a factory in Somerset in order to create more jobs in the UK.

So, who is the Best of British? Here are a few examples I have picked out to show you why buying British-made is worth it:

TATTY DEVINE

ALEXANDRA KING
